Honda and Toyota are known for their rivalry, and the rivalry is even tenser between the Odyssey and Sienna lineups. The two offer smooth handling, high safety ratings, roomy interiors with a choice of seven- or eight-passenger seating and there engines are uniquely fuel efficient! The two vehicles tick all the right boxes but just like in every contest, a winner must still emerge.

Styling and Features comparison

Some structural improvements were made on the Honda Odyssey for the 2014 model year, which Honda believes will help improve the vehicle’s safety score. These minor exterior enhancements include a new grille, a re-sculpted aluminum hood and fenders, a new lower fascia with chrome-trimmed fog lights, new LED tail-lamps and a fresh badging motif. The headlight housings get a darker finish, and the mirror housings have two tones.

Interior of 2014 Toyota Sienna was significantly enhanced with new materials and new technologies. It comes with features such as Bluetooth facilities, USB ports, satellite radio, dual-zone temperature control, navigation system and leather seats. On the other hand, the 2014 Odyssey features HD radio, keyless entry and start, HondaLink, which uses an occupant’s smartphone to access the internet and the HondaVAC (built-in vacuum). Inside, the Odyssey is surprisingly quiet. Active noise cancellation and engine mounts both suppress excess road noise and engine vibrations.

Both vehicles were well equipped to cater for passengers’ safety. The Odyssey earned five stars in the NHTSA crash test, while the Sienna earned four stars. 2014 Honda Odyssey features Expanded View Driver’s Mirror, Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Warning, among other safety features.

Powertrain and drivetrain comparison

Nothing much differentiates the two vehicles here. The Odyssey will return the 3.5-liter V-6 which makes 247 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque across the trim levels. Depending on the trim, it will be paired with a five- or six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota gave up a 4-cylinder motor in its Siena lineup for a 3.5l V6 motor rated at 266hp. The 2014 Sienna offers all-wheel drive and 6-speed automatic transmission.

After a careful look at the 2014 Honda Odyssey, some minivan fans may prefer it to the Siena mainly due to its more advanced technology. However, these few advantages come at a price; the Odyssey usually bear a steeper price than competing minivans with similar features, and the Sienna has some advantages of its own too. Despite Odyssey’s bigger size, it is not as spacious as the Toyota Siena. Another advantage it has is the fuel economy.

The fuel economy figure is one factor one must consider carefully in a debate between automobiles. Customers always responded very well to any technology that helps them save money, and Toyota does not joke with fuel efficiency. Toyota Sienna was the first minivan with the hybrid technology to enter the U.S market! Fuel economy figures of the new Siena van stand at 19/24 mpg for the smaller engine, 18/25 for the FWD V6, and 17/23 for the AWD V6. Toyota is also offering a Hybrid version with EPA of 30/29 mpg highway. This alone could tilt the balance towards the 2014 Toyota Sienna  in its competition with other minivans.
