Nissan is working on a redesigned Frontier for the 2014 model year, and it will soon get to the market. The Frontier is already a popular vehicle in the mid-size truck segment; it combines an exceptional on- and off-road performance with extraordinary power and premium hardware. Although the 2014 Nissan frontier will still come with the same engine options as its predecessor, some noticeable improvements has been made in the vehicle. With the expected improvements, the Frontier is set to become the greatest pickups in the American market. Although the Nissan Frontier belongs to the midsize pickup segment, it offers buyers the capability of a full-size truck and better fuel-efficiency.
Nissan Frontier 2014 Platform
Nissan’s rugged F-Alpha platform underpins the Frontier 2014 model. The strong platform helps boost its maximum towing capacity to 6,500 pounds (in RWD V6 form).
2014 Nissan Frontier Body Styles and Trim
The Redesigned 2014 Frontier is offered in King Cab and Crew Cab body styles, 4×2 and 4×4 driveline configurations and five trim levels; the Frontier S (4-cylinder and V6), SV, PRO-4X, Desert Runner and SL (Crew Cab only) trims.
2014 Frontier Dimension and Exterior
The dimensions of the Nissan Frontier 2014 model is expected to remain as it is. All models will be the same; 1.780 mm in height, 5.230 mm in length and 1.850 mm in width. We have also heard that the distance between the axles will be 3.200 mm. The car will weigh from 2.910 kg to 3.015kg depending on the body style.
The 2014 Frontier will come with a distinctive exterior design. Some of the notable exterior features include the titanium colored alloy wheels and fog lamps. The SL trim will feature fog lamps designed with chrome and 18-inch alloy wheels with silver finish. Buyers can go for any of six exterior colors (premium black, glacial white, silver breeze, flame red, grey steel and green army) on offer.
Some 2014 Frontier changes are expected in the feature list, with a range of upgrades planned for the different trims. Most significant change inside the entry-level S trim include the infusion of more standard equipment, such as an upgraded stereo and Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and the introduction of an A/C and cruise control feature.
2014 Frontier Seats
Other changes expected in the 2014 Frontier redesign include a heated front seat on the SV VTP package; standard heated cloth front seats on PRO-4X models (optional on SV models), enhanced optional navigation system including smartphone integration and improved voice recognition and NissanConnect Apps functionality.
Frontier 2014 Engine options
Despite the improvements, the new 2014 Nissan frontier will share many things in common with the current Frontier model. Just like the current model, two choices of engines are offered on the 2014 Frontier, there is the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 152 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque and an optional 4.0-liter V6 which is good enough to deliver 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque.
Several 2014 Frontier changes including the reduced engine friction and the enhanced aerodynamic measures will improve the fuel efficiency in some powertrain combinations.
2014 Frontier Fuel Economy
In rear-wheel-drive configuration and when equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, the four-cylinder engine’s estimated EPA figures will be 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. These figures drop to 17/23 mpg (the highway mpg is 1mpg more than what we got in the previous iteration) when a five-speed automatic is used. When the V6 engine is paired with a standard six-speed manual, the configuration returns 16/22 mpg, which is 2 mpg city more than before. The figures remain the same with the automatic transmission.
Frontier 2014 Suspension and Handling
The truck shares the same suspension and component designs (including an all-steel double-wishbone front suspension, a solid axle rear suspension and a long suspension stroke) with the full-size Titan pickup. Frontier 2014 model has a relatively modest dimension and curb weight, which gives it smoother handling than many full-size trucks out there.
Safety
Standard safety features in the Nissan Frontier 2014 models include the dual front, side and full-length side curtain airbags, traction and stability control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. The new Nissan Frontier has not gone through the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but the similarly designed 2013 model was rated good in both front and side-impact test, and roof strength tests. The 2014 model is also expected to earn high ratings from these tests.
Key Competitors
Buyers can also consider the Toyota Tacoma, which is similarly priced or the larger Honda Ridgeline.
