Chevrolet’s new flagship sports sedan, the 2014 Chevrolet SS made its debut some few days ago at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. According to a statement released by Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America, “Chevrolet was built on the strength of rear-drive performance sedans, yet it has not offered one in the past 17 years. This is set to change as the new Chevy SS has come to fill this void”.
Most sedans out there are front-wheel drive, and they are perfect for everyday use, but the 2014 Chevy SS is the first Chevrolet rear-wheel-drive sedan to enter the portfolio in 17 years. While the Malibu and Impala are aimed at anyone looking to buy a mainstream family sedan, the 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan is targeted at buyers who are mainly interested in ultra-high performance car and nothing else. The SS in the name stands for “Super Sport”, this badge has been reserved for high-performance versions of mainstream cars since 1961.
Styling
“From every angle, the 2014 Chevy SS screams power and performance,” said John Cafaro design director Chevrolet passenger cars and small crossovers.
The Chevrolet Sedan is elegantly athletic. Up front, there is an aluminum hood which shows a subtle power bulge. At the rear, there is a tapered, tear-drop shape which helps to improved aerodynamic performance. Other notable exterior features include the HID headlamps, light-emitting diode daytime running lights and the jewel-like chrome accents. The new SS sedan rides on forged aluminum wheels, wrapped in high-performance Bridgestone tires.
The 5-passenger Chevrolet SS 2014 delivers exhilarating driving experience while providing luxurious space, comfort and convenience. The leather seats all have side bolstering for spirited cornering. Other high-end features in the interior include a Bose Nine-speaker sound system, Push-button start and Touch screen.
Performance
The 2014 Chevrolet SS is powered by a 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque LS3 Chevrolet V-8 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed can be shifted manually with TAPshift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. According to Chevrolet, with this engine the sedan will be able to make a 0-to-60 dash in about five seconds. This makes the car the quickest sedans at the moment.
To ensure perfect turning and stopping when accelerating, the car features standard Brembo brakes, with 355-mm rotors and four-piston front calipers, and a sport-tuned chassis. The car uses a MacPherson strut front and multilink independent rear suspension geometry, and an electronic power steering system which is well optimized for sport driving. Chevrolet SS 2014 model’s performance is further improved by its 50/50 weight distribution and the low center of gravity which help in improving the handling.
Safety Features
The SS is the first Chevrolet to offer Automatic parallel parking-assist sensors. It also comes with safety tech like blind-spot detector, Lane Departure Warning, StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control, Forward Collision Alert and Rear-vision camera
The 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan will be available at dealerships later this year. Pricing information is not yet out but it should be set closer to the on-sale date.
