Many automakers are dropping their large body-on-frame SUVs for smaller, lighter and more fuel efficient cars due to the high fuel prices, but General Motors is already working on the 2014 Cadillac Escalade. Just like the current model, the Escalades will be available as a rear- or all-wheel drive. The vehicle is set to compete with Infiniti QX56, Audi Q7, Lexus LX570, Mercedes-Benz GL-class, Lincoln Navigator and Land Rover Range Rover.
Pictures of the vehicle were taken by some photographers sometimes in October undergoing testing in Michigan. Few details were revealed about the vehicle from the spy photos; the prototype was covered in a thick camouflage, and not much could be lifted off the photos. We have now gotten some new information about the Cadillac Escalade 2014.
2014 Escalade changes
The 2014 Escalade will sit on a new K2 platform. The new platform will also be used by the new Chevy Tahoe, Silverado, and Suburban. GMC’s Sierra and Yukon will also use the architecture. From what we have seen, it appears like the Escalade will retain the solid rear axle used by the current model. The new platform and the rear axle will not necessarily improve its ride quality but this will improve its efficiency by increasing its payload and towing capacity beyond what some of its competitors are offering.
The fourth generation Cadillac Escalade features underpinnings which gives the vehicle more flexibility and also increases its interior space. Although this new luxury truck comes with some of the industry-best convenience features, the carmaker did not do enough to reduce its fuel economy. Since 2007 when the current Escalade was launched, it has been running on 22-inch wheels. We have reasons to believe that this option will be offered again on the 2014 Escalade.
A swept-back headlamp design seen on the Cadillac ATS and XTS is the prominent feature in the exterior of the Escalade. It includes two vertical headlamps and a massive grille design plus LED accent lighting which stretch from the headlamps to the lower bumper. There are speculations that the SUV will come with some aesthetic updates and many luxury features among which is the CUE infotainment system which will be available across the trim level.
2014 Cadillac Escalade Engine
The Cadillac Escalade 2014 model will still have a V8 option under its hood, the 6.2 liter displacements gotten from the current model is expected to remain, but with a direct injection, we should expect a higher performing and more fuel efficient vehicle. We have also heard of a twin-turbo V6 using a 3.6-liter unit. There is also a strong possibility of an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2014 Cadillac Escalade will enter the dealerships in early to mid 2013 but car enthusiasts will have the opportunity of having a first glance at it when it is unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The official price has not been disclosed but with the many changes planned, we expect the price to be higher than $64,165, the current starting price.
