A new generation of the Mini Cooper is around the corner, 2013 Mini Copper is on the way to replace, at least to an extent, the John Cooper Works, Clubman, sportier S trims and some other variants that are on offer. Some things will change in the 2013 model, but many things we remain the way they were. Chief among those things that will remain are the core values like go-kart handling, central speedo and personalization. The Cooper is set to target families with little children who want to own a Mini but do not want to go for the Countryman or any of the bigger Minis. The Countryman can still rely on the loyalty of those fans that prefer the more practical Mini.
2013 Mini Cooper Redesign
The planned design for the Mini Cooper 2013 would ditch the current Cooper model’s suicide-style rear door. This will be achieved by reducing the length of the front doors and extending the rear doors to the C-pillar. There have been some speculations that the car will be C-segmented, and will come with five-doors. One thing we are so sure of is that the new design would ensure that the car’s length gets to 13 feet or there about. We can relate with what MINI is trying to do here, an increased flexibility will position the new Cooper well in the market and increase sales beyond the 285,000 units recorded last year. It must be noted, even with the new set of doors, the rear seats will not have more leg room; it is only suitable for small children. If you have teens, it may not be the ideal choice of car for you.
On the outside, the 2013 Cooper will be wider and lower than before; some organic styling will be used on the wheel arch to give a more compact look. The windscreen will be shallow than before. All these will add up to give it an aerodynamic improvement. Apart from these, we also expect a wider and shorter grille that will give the fascia more visual width.
The sober interior of the Mini Cooper 2013 we saw in the spy photos was a camouflage and a proof that the Mini and the 1-series are about to merge underneath the skin. We saw from there that the climate control will not lose its position at the bottom, just behind the shifter. The steering column now house a second gauge housing, this means that the central speedometer will assume a conventional position directly in front of the driver.
2013 Mini Cooper Powertrain
Under the hood of the 2013 Cooper, we expect a powertrain line-up chock full of turbochargers engines to be used extensively, we expect to see a direct injection, and we believe that apart from the 4-cylinder engine rated at 25 city/31 highway mpg we have heard of, a 3-cylinder option will also be available, although we do not know if this option will be available in the U.S.
The 2013 Mini Copper may no longer be mini, its cargo capacity may be smaller than its rival and the base price may be high when it is released later this year, but with safety features like Side/Curtain Airbags, Traction Control, Stability Control and other cool features, it is a fun to have
