Lexus ES 350, Acura TL, Lincoln MKZ, Audi A6, and Volvo S models are all grouped in the same segment. Aside from belonging to a segment, the 2013 Lexus ES and the 2013 Acura TL has many things in common (they will be released around the same time; in fall 2012), and they will compete for buyers’ attention. If I am shopping for an upscale midsize car, and I have the two cars in front of me, I will go for the Lexus. Let me show you the reason why I think the ES is a better car.
2013 Lexus ES and 2013 Acura TL Styling Comparison
The Acura TL went through a significant enhancement in 2012, the styling was refined, a new transmission came on board, the mileage increased, the performance went up a notch, it became more fuel efficient and the interior was upgraded. The Acura TL 2013 will come just like that, with no changes. Changes or no changes, the 2013 TL has an athletic look, it inspires top driving experience with its SH-AWD form and it has a spacious but disorderly interior.
The Lexus ES 2013 will keep to the core values of restrained styling, understated luxury and composed practicality. Apart from the cautious but more-outgoing styling, the ES350 increases in length, wheelbase and height, but the width stays as it was. The most exciting increment was that of the cabin and the trunk space. The standard 2013 ES sedan comes with an array of modern features like a power glass sunroof, satellite audio system with Bluetooth, climate control, USB inputs with eight speakers, power door locks and windows and heated 10-way power front seats.
Powertrain of Lexus ES 2013 and Acura TL 2013
The 2013 TL uses a standard six-speed automatic transmission, but buyers can also go for a conventional six-speed manual transmission in AWD versions. Powertrains that will be coming with the car include: a 280-horsepower, 3.5-litre V-6 base engine and a 305-hp, 3.7-litre V-6 for the AWD models.
The 2013 ES FWD will be powered by the tried- and-tested 3.5-litre V6 engine that will deliver 268 horsepower paired with a six-speed auto transmission. With this engine, the car will be capable of making 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds. The electronically boosted power steering system will also help its fuel economy. The 2013 Lexus ES 300 hybrid will share a drivetrain with the Camry Hybrid; a 2.5-litre four cylinder engine with an EPA rating of 40 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.
Safety Comparison
The Lexus ES 2013 model Technology package will also come with many active and passive safety features like Lane Departure Warning System, side curtain airbags, stability control, dynamic cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert systems and proximity sensors among others. The Acura TL 2013 will not have Lane Departure Warning System and rear cross-traffic alert, but it will have front-seat side-impact torso and Side curtain airbags, Electronic stability system, and blind spot warning system, Antilock brakes.
Price and Conclusion
2013 Acura TL is coming out with a bottom-line price of about $46k, and the 2013 Lexus ES will be released with a base price of $39,500. Although the TL also has a manual transmission option, AWD performance and standard leather seat, the ES is an easy choice with its higher fuel efficiency, less expensive price, more safety features, more comfortable interior, and roomier cabin and trunk space.
