Honda got our attention when it unveiled the Acura NSX Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It was so amazing that a car that went out of production seven years ago could be the centre of attention. Along with an edge-cutting design, the 2013 Acura NSX boasts of some class-leading technological features and it packs a reliable engine under its hood. The car may as well be called the most-anticipated sports car, but how does it compare to the other cars in its segment, can it win a 2013 Acura NSX vs 2013 Audi R8 contest?
The Audi R8 has cemented its reputation as a true supercar with attractive look and top-of-the-segment performance. The R8 is a classic made from a skillful blend of leading technological cues and racing tips gotten from another Volkswagen brand, Lamborghini. The Audi R8 2012 model ranks first among 5 Super Luxury Sports Cars in a ranking based on an analysis of reviews, safety data, test drives and reliability. The refreshed 2013 Audi R8 features some minor cosmetic changes and updates such as new LED headlights and taillights and a fine-tuned front fascia and an iconic single-frame grille. This new Audi is on its way to becoming my favourite sports car!
The Acura NSX 2013 features an all-wheel drive and a mid-mounted V6 engine, perhaps taking a cue from Audi, who perfected the idea. Unlike the Audi, the Acura uses a 7-speed transmission mated to electric motors to drive its rear wheels and uses another pair of electric motors to power its axle. This gives the car an advantage of fast quarter mile speed with a frightening 0 t0 60 mph ratings.
The Audi R8 2013 model is powered by either a 430-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 or a 525-hp, 5.2-liter V-10 engine which were both carried over from the previous model. A six-speed manual transmission also returns but Audi dropped its balky R tronic single-clutch six-speed automatic for an S tronic seven-speed dual-clutch auto. According to a source in the Audi’s production unit, buyers should expect the new transmission system to give a smoother but less track-oriented performance.
Having two independent electric motors on the front axle of a rear wheel car is something Audi has also done in some of its supercar concepts like the eTron. This gives the car maximum handling and better grip when negotiating a bend.
Hijacking someone else’s identity is permitted. But the truth is that identity thieves can only stay in the shadows of the identity owner. After waiting for a number of years, the 2013 Acura NSX has attempted to take up a different identity, an R8 identity and it now lives in the 2013 Audi R8’s shadow. The R8 has become a benchmark for luxury automakers who would like to introduce new entry-level sedans. While we must admit that the Acura NSX 2013 has come close, it has not achieved the critical acclaim enjoyed by the Audi. It is hard to hit a moving target! The R8 retains its position as the leader of the pack for this model year and wins the 2013 Acura NSX vs Audi R8 contest hands down.
